I was just wondering if saw palmetto berries reduce testosterone levels. I would also like to know if it reduces the effects that testosterone has on the growing body (teen years).

Saw palmetto more specifically targets the enzyme 5-alpha reductase, in so doing it blocks the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT is implicated in benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) as well as male pattern balding.

It should not reduce testorone levels. On the contrary, one study showed a rise in tissue testosterone levels after in-vitro treatment of BPH samples with a lipid-sterol extract of Serenoa repens (Saw palmetto), with a comcomittant decrease of DHT.

Thus it appears to increase free testosterone whilst decreasing DHT.

One word of caution to anyone who was trying to conceive who might read this: if a male was planning on conceiving, they should stop taking Saw palmetto for several months prior to that. 5-alpha reductase may play a role in spermatogenesis and thus conception.

I would not take saw palmetto if you are under 21 and thus still growing both in height and organ growth without consulting a doctor [with an interest in endocrinology] or endocrinologist first. 5-alpha reductase may be a key enzyme [and DHTa key testosterone metabolite] for prostate growth. The latter gland is important for male sexual and reproductive function. Thus it would be wise to stay away from anything that impacts on male sexual glandular development if you are still developing. Males can continue to develop until about 21 years of age.
