The health benefits attributed to flaxseed in the diet are almost too numerous to mention. It reportedly offers protection against heart disease, cancer, and diabetes. It lowers cholesterol and high blood pressure and is effective for relieving symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome, asthma, and migraines. Flaxseed helps people relax and improves sleep. It restores hormonal balance in women, and improves dry eye syndrome. Back in the 1950s, a German biochemist by the name of Joanna Budwig is famous for successfully treating terminally ill cancer patients by feeding them her prescribed diet including a combination of flaxseed oil and cottage cheese.
Do not rush out to buy flaxseed just yet, at least according to Nutrition Action Newsletter, a reputable publication from the Center for Science in the Public Interest. According to a December 2005 article titled Just the Flax- A Miracle Seed Comes Down to Earth, there is only limited evidence that alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), one of the main ingredients of flaxseed, can protect the heart. The article also cites a 2005 study involving 45,000 men that found those who ate the highest amounts of ALA were more likely to develop advanced prostate cancer than those who ate the least ALA. The author was quick to point out that flax was not singled out, and the cancer rate was linked to ALA intake from all sources. In other words, proceed with caution.
Flaxseed is also contains extremely high levels of potent antioxidants called lignans, known best for their cancer fighting properties. Nutrition Action cites a Finnish study that reported women with the highest blood levels of lignans were 60% less likely to have breast cancer. Unfortunately, 29 of the 194 women who did develop breast cancer had some of the highest levels. Three years later the study was repeated and found no link between lignans and the incidence of breast cancer.
Confused? So are the experts. Mayoclinic.com has evaluated the data from flaxseed research and found its use as a laxative the only benefit that graded higher than unclear scientific evidence exists.
If you do not like fish, healthy aging expert Dr. Andrew Weil recommends whole flaxseed as a source of omega-3 fatty acids, but is less enthusiastic about flaxseed oil, expressing concerns about spoilage and the lack of lignans which are often removed during processing.
An article by Harvard Health Publications sums of the confusion best by concluding this: It is too early to say whether flaxseeds are right for you. They do contain lignans that function as phytoestrogens- but so does soy. They are very rich in ALA, which may reduce the risk of heart disease-but may also increase the risk of developing prostate cancer in men.
There might be something there, but it is clear we do not have all of the answers yet on the benefits or risks of taking flaxseed.

Loss of sex drive and impotence are very common in men and women as they age, and talking with your doctor can alleviate fears, as there are many treatment options. Stress is a key factor in one’s sexual health. The simple act of fearing that you may not be able to get an erection can in itself cause erectile dysfunction. When partners are on the opposite end of the libido scale, it is important to communicate and find ways to pleasure each other when intercourse is not possible.
It is normal for the majority of men to experience erectile dysfunction (impotence) at least once in their lives. After men reach the age of 65, impotence becomes more common. They experience changes in erectile function as they experience changes in the rest of their bodies; it is a part of the natural process. Orgasms may not seem as powerful and erectile recovery after orgasm may take longer. There are several specific symptoms of impotence: the inability to achieve a full erection, to maintain an erection during intercourse, or to have an erection at all.
There are two facets to maintaining an erection, one is physical, and one is mental. The physical process is relatively strait forward: the penis has two cylindrical structures (corpora cavernosa) that are made of a sponge like material and run the entire length of the penis. This erectile tissue fills with blood when the male is aroused, and like a wet sponge, this tissue expands up to seven times its normal size, forming an erection. After ejaculation, the penis returns to its normal size.
The mental process is often the cause of erectile dysfunction. Arousal levels often determine the quality of an erection. The longer the arousal, the harder the penis becomes. Men can become aroused by any of the five senses: taste, touch, smell, and more commonly by visual and auditory stimulation. This mental state causes the nervous system to stimulate blood flow to the penis.
Erectile dysfunction occurs when this delicate balance between the physical and mental facets of the erection process is disrupted.
The mental causes of erectile dysfunction include: stress (this could be from work, or family, or both), psychological problems, anxiety (about finances, children, or life in general), fatigue, depression, negative feelings (toward yourself, spouse, or circumstances around you), resentment, hostility, or a genuine lack of interest.
The physical causes of erectile dysfunction include: diabetic neuropathy (nerve damage caused by diabetes), cardiovascular disorders (which can affect the blood flow to the penis), prescription medications (talk to your doctor and find out if any of your medications are a potential cause of ED), cancer or prostate operations, spinal cord fractures, multiple sclerosis (MS), hormonal imbalances, or alcohol and other forms of drug abuse.
Erectile dysfunction may be a symptom of a more serious medical problem. It is important to determine whether the symptoms of erectile dysfunction are physical or mental in nature.

Men are gaining more than 20 pounds after twenty years have a bigger likelihood of contracting prostate cancer than those who retain their youthful weight to previous age. However, these data may vary relying on race & social status, say scientists. The researchers found that between the eighty four thousand Americans of middle age, the white and African-Americans, if they gained weight once their age, the risk of prostate cancer is lesser. Compared through white men, gained but 4.5 kg, those who have recovered strongly, sick of this aggressive type of cancer are twice whether likely.
Connection between socioeconomic status of patients with prostate cancer & mortality from this disease has been continually studied in the United States. But, the scientists needed to understand how unequal income impact on mortality from prostate cancer in Switzerland, where the health technique is very high, & where spending on medical and medical insurance are the extremely best amid the largest countries in the world. Among 1995 and 2005, Dr. Elisabetta Rapiti, from University of Geneva, jointly through colleagues, conducted a regional study, which was attended by all members of the community who were diagnosed by prostate cancer.
Entire for now of prostate cancer were 2738 people. The patient was classified whether a representative of higher secondary or reduce socio-economic category on the basis of his workplace at the time of diagnosis. The researchers compared the characteristics of tumors & care software representatives of different socio-economic groups. Compared through patients with good socio-economic standing, patients with less standing had fewer possibilities to identify cancer. Conjointly, they’re additional seemingly detected cancer at a later stage, and for the classification of tumors, they have passed low tests. Additionally, the “poor” patients were rarely removed prostate, & instead, prescribed additional typically doctor handle.
Patients with low socio-economic status the risk of dying from prostate cancer was two moments higher than in all alternative patients. “The increase in mortality from prostate cancer amid patients through less socio-economic status will be explained virtually wholly lately diagnosis & insufficiently cautious care plans. Every this speaks concerning the unfair distribution of medical care resources “, – said Rapiti.
The learn authors believe {that the} reduction of socio-economic inequalities in health ought to be the high priority policy to shield public medical. Without exception, every patients should have entrance to prevention & initial diagnosis of illness & ought to be entitled to obtain standard care. Wheter all of those suggestions are met, then identify socio-economic element of mortality from prostate cancer might disappear. Eventually, cancer cells may metastasize (spread) all over the body.
By the time symptoms seem, the cancer could be additional advanced. By age 50, terribly few men have symptoms of prostate cancer, nevertheless some precancerous or cancerous cells are present. More than half of all Yankee men have some cancer in their prostate glands by the age of 80. Most of these cancers never create a problem. Many men with prostate cancer do not die from this disease.
Prostate cancer can sit quietly for years, and most men with the disease haven’t any obvious symptoms. When symptoms finally appear, they’ll be almost like the symptoms of BPH:
* Bother passing urine * Frequent urge to pass urine * Weak or interrupted stream * Pain or burning * Nagging pain in the rear, hips, or pelvis
The prostate cancer will unfold to the lymph nodes of the pelvis, or it might spread throughout the body, usually to the bones. Bone pain, particularly in the rear, will be a symptom. The chance factors for prostate cancer are:

Early detection is crucial to successful treatment. Men over the age of fifty ought to have annual prostate exams by a qualified physician who could perform one or more of the following:
* Health history and current symptoms * Digital rectal exam (DRE) — The DRE is the standard means to check the the prostate. With a gloved and lubricated finger, the doctor feels the prostate from the rectum. The check lasts concerning 10 to 15 seconds. This exam checks for size, firmness, and texture of the the prostate; any laborious areas, lumps, or growth spreading beyond the the prostate; and pain within the the prostate. * Prostate Specific Antigen Test (PSA) — PSA is a protein created by traditional cells and prostate cancer cells. It’s found within the blood and can be measured with a blood test. PSA levels can rise if a man has the prostate cancer, but a high PSA is not proof of cancer. PSA levels go up with age. African-Yankee men tend to have higher PSA levels. Doctors usually use a score of four (nanograms) or higher to work out that more tests are necessary. * The prostate Biopsy — If cancer is suspected, a biopsy may be indicated. Typically performed by a urologist, small tissue samples are taken directly from the prostate and examined underneath a microscope. Most men who have biopsies after routine exams don’t have cancer, however it’s best to check if cancer is suspected.
Treatment options for the prostate cancer embrace:
