Most Important Vitamins for Your Age

Your age, as well as your gender, says a lot about what vitamins your body craves and needs the most. Even though everyone can benefit from a taking a multivitamin, we all have specific needs once we get to a certain age. Children, teens, women and men all have various supplement needs during specific intervals in their lives. Here are some tips on helping you decide what some of the most crucial vitamins are for your age and gender.

For children, up to age 12, vitamins A, C and E are the most important. Vitamin A is essential for bone growth while vitamin C helps bones form collagen and aids iron absorption. Vitamin E is responsible for boosting immunity. For teens, ages 13-19, niacin, thiamin and riboflavin are very crucial. Riboflavin is responsible for supporting the immune system and encouraging healthy skin and hair. Thiamin helps relieve stress and niacin is responsible for maintaining a healthy complexion. Women during their child-bearing years can benefit greatly from folic acid. Folic acid stabilizes hormone levels and it plays a crucial role in fetal spine and brain development. Women during their post-menopausal age can benefit greatly from vitamin D and magnesium. Vitamin D is responsible for improving bone density and slowing down the progression of breast cancer; magnesium on the other hand helps bones absorb more calcium.

As for men’s health, some of the most crucial supplements include vitamin C and lycopene. Vitamin C helps keep arteries strong thereby reducing the risk of a heart attack; whereas, lycopene is a powerful antioxidant which can help men fight off prostate issues. So as you can see there are countless vitamins and minerals out there, the key however, is finding the ones that are most beneficial for your age and gender.  There are many herbal remedies and supplements available today; everything from weight control (diet pills) to appetite control can be treated naturally. Some of the best diet pills are 100% natural. Taking care of our bodies with vitamins, minerals, and herbs has never been easier.

Hi if you eat a good balanced diet, you will get all the nutrients your body needs. You would only take additional supplements if you were a very keen sports person.
By a good healthy diet I mean, lots of fruit and veg, whole grain cereal, lean meat and fish, low fat dairy products and some treats as well. They start in order of importance and greatest amount.

    Hope this helps,

Unfortunately nutrition science is a long way away from determine a list of all the nutrients which are important. At one point they thought it was just protein, fat and carbohydrates. Then they broke it down further into the major vitamins and minerals that we know about now (Vitamin A, Iron, etc). But now there’s a lot of research going on about antioxidants and flavonoids suggesting that they are also very important to our heath. Who knows what science will discover in another few decades. An apple has over 200 compounds in it – science hasn’t studied all of them to know which are important and useful and which are not… and that’s just one food.

The best thing to do is to try to eat a variety of foods. Refer back to the food pyramid and just try your best to get the different food groups covered and try a variety of foods within each. (e.g. picking different colours of fruits and veggies instead of eating the same ones over and over).

If you’re having problem eating all of the food groups, talk to your doctor about if you’re missing any major nutrients.

A general vitamin will cover mostly everything you need. Big problem with taking individual vitamins is not getting everything else you need, especially if the vitamin needs other vitamins or minerals to work in the body. I started taking a product called BioBasics about 4 months ago and really like it. They offer a 30-Day trial if you would like to try it, just cancel it in time if you don’t like it. Otherwise you’ll be charged.
