The prostate is a gland found only in men, which lies just below the bladder. The tube through which urine flows from the bladder when you pass water goes first through the prostate gland then out through the penis. The prostate gland can become enlarged in many men as they get older which then causes difficulty with urination.
The job of the prostate gland is to produce fluid which forms part of semen and helps to nourish sperm. The prostate gland sits in front of the back passage or “rectum” which is why if a doctor wants to examine the prostate gland they sense it by putting a finger into your back passage. This is also known as a “digital rectal examination” or DRE for short. From feeling the prostate gland the doctor can tell how enlarged the gland is and whether it feels normal or cancerous, this can then provide a picture of prostate cancer if it exists.
Prostate gland cells are constantly turning over to replace old with new but sometimes this process can lack of control. Cancer is the name for cells which have lost control of their renewal process and start to grow unchecked. They grow into a group of cells called a “tumour”. As the cells grow they can start to invade surrounding cells. This invading process is known as acting in a “malignant” fashion. Cells can break off the tumour and spread to other sites in the body, usually via the blood stream. The cells can then grow where they have settled, often in distant parts of the body such as the bones or brain. These deposits are often called “secondaries” or “metastases”. These deposits are not new cancers but are groups of cancer cells spread from the original or “primary” cancer in the prostate gland.
Most often in cancer of prostate this process of tumour growth followed by invasion then metastasis is relatively slow and can occur over many months or years. This is why some men may have prostate cancer but never have a problem because of it i.e. their prostate cancer grows so slowly that other diseases or illnesses (e.g. heart attack or stroke) cause problems or even death before the prostate cancer has developed far enough to cause symptoms or spread from the prostate. With modern treatments many men with early prostate cancer can be cured and in many more the prostate cancer can be controlled and the invasion process slowed even more. Prostate cancer survival rates vary widely around the world, although detection in 3rd World countries is often poorly catalogued.
The cause of prostate cancer is not known. What is known is the characteristics of those men who tend to develop prostate issues. These are known as “risk factors” i.e. men with these characteristics are at greater risk of developing the cancer. However it is iimportant to realise that ALL men are at risk of prostate cancer and even young men who have no history of cancer in their family can develop prostate cancer.

Prostate cancer is typically a slow progressing cancer and symptoms often do not arise for many years. If the cancer is caught at an early stage, there might be no noticeable symptoms. Some men, however, will experience symptoms that could indicate the presence of prostate cancer.
Prostate cancer can often be discovered at an early stage by testing the amount of prostate specific antigen (PSA) in the blood. Prostate cancer can also be detected early by your doctor performing a digital rectal examination (DRE). Since the prostate gland is situated close to the rectum, a doctor can physically detect if there are any cancerous signs in your prostate.
Unfortunately the PSA and DRE tests are not totally accurate and conclusive. This can lead to anxiety and confusion, or even to a false sense of security. So important things to consider are your age, your general health and your lifestyle. If you are young and develop cancer of prostate, if not caught early enough, it could shorten your life. If however you are older or in poor health, then cancer or prostate might never become a serious problem due to its slow-growing nature.
The American Cancer Society recommends that men commence having the prostate specific antigen (PSA) blood test and digital rectal examination (DRE) annually from the age of 50. Those at higher risk, such as African Americans and those with close relatives who developed prostate cancer at an early age are recommended to commence testing at 45.
The prognosis for prostate cancer sufferers has improved dramatically in recent years. In the past twenty years the overall survival rate for all stages of prostate cancer has increased from 67% to 97%. Thus more men are living significantly longer after diagnosis. In all likelihood this is due to early detection programs, increased public awareness, particularly of symptoms of prostate cancer, and the adoption of healthier lifestyles.

A prostate tumour is a lump created by an abnormal and uncontrollable growth of cells. It can be either malignant (cancerous) or benign (non-cancerous). Each year about 35 000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer in the UK.
The prostate is a gland that produces the liquid part of sperm. It is about the size of a walnut and lies at the base of the bladder. The front of the prostate surrounds the urethra, the tube that carries urine form the bladder and out through the penis. The prostate gland increases slowly as you grow. Any change of the size of the prostate can narrow this tube, making it difficult to urinate.
Cancerous tumours can grow through the prostate and spread to other parts of the body (through the bloodstream or the lymph system) where they may grow and form secondary tumours. This is called metastasis. The prostate cancer symptoms include difficulty in starting to pass urine, a weak and sometimes intermittent flow of urine, dribbling of urine before and after urinating, a frequent or urgent need to pass urine, pain when passing, and blood in the urine and/or erectile dysfunction.
The prostate cancer symptoms are similar to those produced by a common non-cancerous disease where the prostate becomes enlarged (benign prostatic hyperplasia). Inflammation of the prostate (prostatitis) can also give you these symptoms. If you have any of these symptoms, it’s very important you visit your doctor for advice. If prostate cancer is found early, it can often be cured. It is important to note, however, that most men with early prostate cancer have no symptoms at all.
If prostate cancer spreads to other parts of the body, other symptoms can develop. The most common site for prostate cancer to spread is to the lower back, pelvis and hips, causing bone pain and tenderness.
The cause for prostate cancer is not fully understood at present. The risk of getting prostate cancer gets higher as you get older. Most men diagnosed with prostate cancer are over the age of 50. Men from the age of about 45 can be affected, but this is less common.
When you have close relatives who have had prostate cancer, you are also at higher risk. You are two and a half times more likely to get prostate cancer if your father or brother has been diagnosed. The risk increases more if your relative was under the age of 60 when they were diagnosed, or if more than one relative has been diagnosed with prostate cancer. There has been a suggestion that the risk is also higher if several women in your family who have had breast cancer (you may have inherited a faulty gene which may increase risk of prostate cancer).
If you are Afro-American or Afro-Caribbean you are more at risk. African Caribbean men are three times more likely to be diagnosed with prostate cancer compared to white men. Researchers are looking at what may be the cause of this increased risk, but diet and genes probably play an important part.

I lately attended a meeting of physicians, surgeons, research scientists and concerned individuals for the Pacific Prostate Cancer Conference. Representatives of Oregon Health Sciences University spoke about their state-of-the-art prostate cancer research department. Every man reading this information can benefit from the advances made in prevention, treatment and detection of this disease.
Let’s begin with a brief review of our anatomy. The prostate gland is located around the bottom portion of a man’s bladder and is positioned behind the pubic bone and in front of the rectum. The prostate’s primary function is to produce most of the fluids in semen. Tiny ducts within the prostate convey this fluid to the urethra, the channel that drains urine from the bladder. This fluid is then released through the penis during ejaculation.
Cancer of prostate is the most common cancer in American men. It’s estimated that by age 50, up to 1 in 4 men have some cancerous cells in the prostate gland. By age 80, the ratio increases to 1 in 2. So, your risk of cancer of prostate increases as you age. The average age at diagnosis is actually 72.
Prostate cancer also is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in American men. Yet unlike other cancers, you’re more likely to die with prostate cancer than you are to die from it. On average, an American man has about a 30 percent risk of having prostate cancer in his lifetime, but only about a 3 percent risk of dying of the disease.
The risk of prostate cancer is dramatically higher among blacks, intermediate among whites, and lowest among native Japanese. However, this increase in risk may be due to factors other than those associated with race. Studies have shown a link between levels of testosterone and prostate cancer risk, with black men having the highest levels.
Symptoms of prostate cancer include frequent urination, inability to urinate, blood in urine or semen, or painful ejaculation. Frequent low back pain, burning urination or a weak urine flow are also very common.
There is another condition of the prostate known as Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia or BPH. This is basically an enlarged prostate with no cancerous lesions. Signs for this condition are similar in many respects to prostate cancer. For instance, Prostate-Specific Antigen or PSA levels can become elevated in both BPH and prostatic cancer.
Radiation therapy, chemotherapy and surgery are the three most common approaches to treatment of cancer of prostate. The selection of which method is used depends largely upon the extent of the disease. With the surgical removal of the prostate, there is an increased risk of osteoporosis similar to that of menopause in women. This problem is most often handled by using hormone replacement therapy postoperatively. Calcium and Vitamin D supplements have also been shown to be helpful in reducing this type of bone loss.

Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed non-skin cancer, has overtaken lung cancer as the leading cancer affecting all men and followed by colorectal cancer.
Statistically, 80 percent of prostate cancers occur in men over the age of 65. Although this cancer can also occur in younger individuals, it is very rare under the age of 50. As males age the prostate can lead to problems.
According to prostate cancer survival rates, one out of six American men will develop it in the course of his lifetime. Little did we aware the fact a man is 33% more likely to develop prostate cancer than a woman is to get breast cancer.
In 2004, it is estimated that 234,000 new cases of prostate cancer diagnose in the United States. That makes it the most common cancer among males in America, right after the skin cancer. More than 27,000 deaths due to prostate cancer are expected to occur annually.
One new case every 2 1/2 minutes. One new case every 150 seconds.
While in UK, nearly 35,000 men are diagnosed and about 10,000 men die from prostate cancer annually. This means over one man die every hour in UK.
Today, about two million men are fighting prostate cancer, and over the next decade, as baby boomer men reach the target ripen age for prostate cancer, about three million more will be compelled to join the battle. It is estimated that by 2012, the number of new cases in the U.S. is expected to increase to more than 300,000 new cases per year by 2012.
One new case every 3 minutes. One man dead every 13 minutes.
What is prostate?
Prostate is a male sex gland, the size of a walnut, located behind pubic bone in front of the rectum that encompasses lower part of a bladder. The tube that carries urine (the urethra) runs through the prostate. At birth the gland size is small like a pea and it continue to grow until age of 20 when a man reaches adulthood. Male hormones (called androgens) is responsible for this growth. The gland size will not change until 45, when it starts to grow again.
Its primary function is to produce thick fluids that nourish the sperm, as well as helping propel sperm through the urethra and out of the penis to reach and fertilize an egg. Even though prostate is not a primary component of urinary tract, but it is very important for urinary health.
In older men, the part of the prostate around the urethra may keep on growing. This causes BPH (benign prostatic hyperplasia) which cause problems passing urine. BPH is a problem that must be treated, but it is not cancer.
What is prostate cancer?
The body is made up of different types of cells. Normally, cells grow, divide and then die. Sometimes, cells mutate and begin to grow and divide more quickly than normally. Instead of dying, these abnormal cells clump together and lead to tumors. If these tumors are cancerous or so-called malignant tumors, they can invade and kill healthy tissues in the body. From these tumors, cancer cells can metastasize (spread) and form new tumors in other parts of the body. In contrary, non-cancerous tumors or so-called benign tumors do not spread to other parts of the body.
Cancer of prostate is abnormal cells grow out of control forming small nodules or bumps (overgrowth tissue) on the surface of in the prostate gland. In some cases, the overgrowth tissue is benign and this prostate condition is called Benign Prostatic Hypertrophy (BPH). Other times, abnormal cancerous cells characterize the overgrowth of tissue, and this is referred to as a malignancy or prostate cancer.
As its close proximity to the bladder, prostate disorder might interfere with urination and leading to bladder or kidney problems. It is also located immediately next to the nerves responsible for erections hence it could interfere with sexual function as well.
Although more than 70% of all prostate cancer cases are diagnosed in men over the age of 65, doctors recommend that every man above the age of 50 should have a PSA test and a rectal exam. According to statistic African-American have almost twice as much prostate cancer incidence rates as Caucasian American, hence they should start getting tested at age 40. The same is true if you have a family history of prostate cancer.

Example of an ultrasound affected by prostate cancer (ultrasound can be used to guide a biopsy). Cancer develops from the tissuescells of the prostate, a gland in the male reproductive system when cells will mutate to spread so uncontrollably.
These can spread (metastasize is) in migrating from the prostate to other parts of the body (especially bones and lymph nodes).
Prostate cancer occurs regardless of benign prostatic hypertrophy (or prostate adenoma). It is in the vast majority of cases adenocarcinoma.
Prostate cancer may cause erectile dysfunction, pain, difficulty urinating and other symptoms. Treatment is by surgery, radiotherapy, hormone therapy and sometimes chemotherapy, or combination of these methods.
Frequency
The rate of breast cancer varies widely throughout the world. It is less widespread in South Asia and Far East, more common in Europe and even the United States. According to the American Cancer Society, cancer of breast is rare among Asians and more prevalent among blacks (high rates may also be influenced by the increased effort detection).
Cancer of prostate develops most often in men over 50 years. This is the type of cancer most common in males, where he is responsible for more deaths than any other cancer (except lung cancer). However, many men who develop prostate cancer symptoms do not, do not undergo any therapy and die for other reasons. Many factors of genetic origin, toxicological and diet-related seem involved in the development of this cancer.
We find outbreaks of cancer cells in 30 to 70% of cases in studies performed in autopsies of men 70 to 80 years (details information is included in prostate cancer survival rates); prostate cancer remains the most often asymptomatic: the probability of a man 50 years know a diagnosis of prostate cancer is only 10%. In 3% of cases, this cancer will be fatal.
Geography of Prostate Cancer
There are significant differences in the expression of this cancer, which seems more common among the black man, or where the family has a history pathological with this condition. From 1983-2002, while deaths from cancer were generally higher in the Caribbean city, deaths from prostate cancer and stomach were twice as common in the Caribbean in the mainland (while colorectal cancer and lung cancer were three times less frequent). This could be explained by both genetic reasons and food (green tea and / or soybeans or other foods rich in selenium) which appear to protect most Japanese living in Japan (while living in the United States is not).
Causes
They are not known with precision.
There is a genetic predisposition and the presence of certain genes seems slightly correlated with the onset of the disease. In particular, a mutation on chromosome 8 might explain the higher incidence of this cancer in black American.
Nutritional causes were discussed with a potentially protective role of lycopene. Similarly, exercise may have a slightly protective effect and tobacco a deleterious effect.

prostate health is one of the most important concerns for men, and each man should have it checked yearly after a certain age. Most prostate problems for men happen past age 65, which is why good prostate health is so important earlier in life. However, maintaining a healthy gland is still the best way to avoid having to undergo strenuous treatment tactics to manage these problems. I certainly feel that having a healthy prostate is an excellent way to keep cancer at bay. Maintaining it healthy is still the best way to avoid treatment techniques that may cause discomfort and pain.Â
1- A 2003 study found that men who got the most ultraviolet (UV) exposure from sunlight tended to maintain healthier glands than those who got very little UV. Spend more time in your back yard — or in your garden, on a hiking trail or in a sprawling meadow — means you're out in the sun.
2- A 10-20 minute prostate massage at least once a month, and as often as once a day, is important for a healthy gland. This can help equal the sensual playing field between partners; if a healthy prostate is massaged correctly, it can become super stimulated and feel like it is glowing.Â
There are other ways of determining a healthy prostate, one of them being a blood test which measures the concentration of a protein called Prostate Specific Antigen. There are three well-known plants that are often used to help promote a healthy prostate. One of them, Saw palmetto has been tested in numerous clinical studies and it has now been shown to help promote a healthy prostate in several ways. Another important benefit of saw palmetto, Pygeum, Stinging Nettles and beta sitosterol is that they help control unhealthy DHT levels and estrogen levels. It is probably the reason why Saw Palmetto, Pygeum and Stinging Nettles work so well to promote healthy prostate function.Â
Natural prostate health is the best choice that many men are making today to ensure their health, since natural health is about taking care of your body as a whole. Remember that a healthy body means a healthy prostate, and the key to good prostate health is to keep your body in tiptop shape through exercise, proper drinking habits, and vitamins and minerals.
